The Lower Savinja Valley and its specialties

Lower Savinja Valley begins west of Celje. Lying along the road and railroad are the villages of Levec and Petrovče with the nearby Novo Celje Castle.

The castle was built in 1760 and resembles the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna. Further on are the villages of Dobriša vas and Vrbje. Before reaching Prebold and Latkova vas, the Savinja turns northwest.

The largest settlements in this part of the valley are Šempeter and Žalec, a reputed hop-growing center. Žalec obtained market rights before Celje, although it was soon surpassed by the rapidly developing town of Celje. A hop from Žalec is exported all over the world.

Lying to the north along the Ložnica stream are the villages of Podlog, Gotovlje and Arja vas. Podlog is a starting point for visits to the underground cave of Pekel (Hell Cave), where the Peklenščica stream takes its source. The cave has two entrances connected by an educational forest trail. It is situated below Ponikovaska planota (plateau) north of Šempeter.
