Gornji grad, the center of the valley
Gornji grad is the center of the valley. In 1140 the Benedictines established a monastery here. In the 15th century the Emperor closed the monastery and assigned the property to the Ljubljana diocese. The town was the official seat of the Ljubljana diocese until 1783. A baroque cathedral was built here in this period. The settlement was granted market rights in the 14th century, and proclaimed a town in 1928. From here the road leads through a dry, wooded valley to the northeast towards Radmirje ob Savinji. In the middle Ages, the presently renovated Vrbovec Castle in Nazarje guarded the narrow passage between of Nazarje and Mozirje. Perched on a terrace above the castle is a Franciscan monastery with twin towered church. Today Nazarje is an industrial center. On the broad plain created by the river north of Nazarje are the villages of Spodnja Rečica, Rečica, which obtained market rights in the 15th century, Šentjanž, Radmirje, where the road branches off to the southwest towards Ljubno ob Savinji. Ljubno also became a market in the 15th century, and was later known as an important wood trading center. Logs were floated down the Savinja to the Sava River and further on towards Belgrade. Floating was practiced here until 1954. We made it, congratulations!
